Stadtkirche
An octagonal tower has watched over Thun's rooftops since 1330.
The Stadtkirche stands on the hill above Thun's Old Town, next to the castle, its silhouette shared between the two for nearly seven centuries. The tower dates to around 1330, its interior frescoes added a century later. What surrounds it today is younger: a baroque nave built in 1738 to designs by Paulus Nader, replacing a Gothic church whose own roots reach back to the 13th century.
Inside, the preaching hall is bright and spacious, its stucco work by Daniel Haag softening the baroque lines. The pulpit dates from 1661, carved by Daniel Gintzi. The communion table, in Renaissance style with a slate top, is older still: 1602. Little inside rushes toward spectacle. The church asks instead to be read layer by layer, one century resting on the next.
From the churchyard, the rooftops of the Old Town fall away toward the Aare.
