Fluhalp
The Matterhorn arrives twice here, once overhead, once in the lake below.
The path from Blauherd climbs past three small lakes before reaching Fluhalp, at 2,606 meters in the Sunnegga-Blauherd-Rothorn area. Stellisee lies just below the terrace, still enough on calm mornings to hold the Matterhorn's reflection.
Inside, the dining room seats eighty in a century-old alpine hut. Outside, the terraces hold up to 250. Winter service runs from Christmas to Easter, with live music some afternoons in February and March. In summer, Fluhalp opens for overnight stays too, in private rooms and dormitories, with sunrise over the peaks before the first hikers arrive from Zermatt.
It is also the starting point for Oberrothorn, at 3,415 meters the highest trekking summit in Europe, about two and a half hours on foot. Most visitors stop for lunch and turn back toward the valley.
