The Hammetschwand lift rises up the sheer cliff face of the Bürgenstock in under a minute, carrying visitors 153 metres to the highest point above Lake Lucerne. Built in 1905 by the same hoteliers who founded the Bürgenstock Resort, it remains Europe's highest outdoor lift, its steel lattice frame anchored into the rock and lit at night for the town below to see.
The route there follows the Felsenweg, a 2.2 kilometre path cut into the mountainside between the resort and the lift's valley station. At the top, 1,132 metres above sea level, a platform opens onto Lake Lucerne, the Rigi and the Pilatus, with the Bernese Alps visible past the Brünig Pass on clear days. A small picnic area sits nearby. The platform itself costs nothing; only the ride up is paid.
